Memphis is a great city, filled with heritage, history and soul, but is it all Kid-friendly? Here are some kid-tips to use if you and your family are looking for some Memphis things to do.
Graceland: If you plan to take your family through Elvis’ mansion here are some tips to keep in mind.
1. Graceland is not at all stroller friendly. You may want to place your little ones and babies in backpack carriers or slings.
2. Older children will be amazed at the fancy cars, planes and glittered jumpsuits. They will entertain themselves with how crazy it all seems compared to the musicians they listen to today.
3. Teenagers will be old enough to understand the importance of Elvis’ life and may even think the mansion tour is “cool”.
Peabody’s Ducks: This hotel should top any family’s list of Memphis things to do. These beloved feathered friends were put into the Peabody Hotel’s lobby fountain as a joke in 1932 by some prankster hunters and have been a tradition ever since.
1. If your only child is a baby or toddler you’re best to watch the ducks from the second story balcony. The crowd in the lobby gets quite large and unintentionally pushy.
2. The ducks are led by a “Duckmaster” that the hotel staff will choose from the children in the crowd. If you know that not being picked might ruin the entire day, keep this information to yourself.
3. If you think your child may enjoy the competition, and would want to try for the position of “Duckmaster” be prepared to be aggressive, some parents take the competition quite seriously. All you really need to do is secure a place in the front of the crowd and have your child smile.
Museum of Rock and Soul: This museum is a one-stop archive of musical history. You’ll be led through an audio tour which includes a lot of Memphis’ musical greats.
1. This museum is a bit in-depth for little ones, though the tour does involve plenty of buttons to start the audio displays. A designated job as “Button Pusher” may get you through the tour without too much trouble.
2. Teenagers can take the tour themselves and will enjoy hearing the stories behind some of the country’s most famous songs. They will also appreciate the independence of taking the tour on their own.
3. The museum is not meant for strollers, so backpack carriers and slings may be your best bet here too.
It isn’t always easy to find things to do that involve the great outdoors, especially when some members of the family are just as happy to stay home and watch the T.V. or play videogames. That’s where the great activities hosted by places like the Minnesota State Parks come in.
You may find that a simple walk in the woods just doesn’t cut it when it comes to getting your children outdoors, but what if they where going to make their own maple syrup? Then would they go? This sugary treat is always a sure sign of spring and will most definitely satisfy the sweet tooth in your family. In the last few days of March every year, Wild River State Park offers the opportunity to watch, taste and smell maple syrup as it is being tapped and made straight from the trunk of the maple tree. Any visitor is welcome to participate in tending the many outdoor cookers and will earn their share of maple syrup to take home.
Another great Minnesota State Parks destination is Mille Lacs Kathio where you can arrange for your family to take a ten person canoe ride! This expedition is great for families and is sure to lead to a few fits of uncontrollable laughter and even more memories. The tours only last about forty-five minutes. This tends to be the perfect length of time for younger paddlers, holding their interest but at the same time ensuring that the experience doesn’t become too exhausting or difficult.
In Maplewood State Park they organize an enjoyable outdoor story time, where the little ones in your family can gather and listen to a variety of great tales, while frogs swim and birds sing nearby. The park staff will also assist the children in making an environmentally friendly craft, such as a frog sun-catcher made using a recycled DVD or CD. Information on these and other events can be found on the Minnesota State Parks website at: www.dnr.state.mn.us.

While on vacation it is really important to every parent that their children have a good time and are as well treated as they are. However not all resorts take children’s needs or interests into consideration, and that’s if they even allow children at all. Zoos are a great way to spend a weekend with your family.Children love to watch the animals, but leave with their imaginations whirling with wonders of the African wilderness. What if you could take them to a place where they would see lions in the wild, free to run and hunt? What if there was a place, where the earth would move under their feet from the rumbling steps of passing elephants?Would you take them there? I just wanted to make a little post to let you know that my family and I were involved in a car wreck on Monday. My sons came out just fine. I do not have any broken bones but my left side is pretty bruised up. I am going to take a couple of weeks off from the blog and I just wanted everyone to know I have not disappeared. Please enjoy reading over the previous post and I will be back soon. Thank you in advance for your patience.
